Rza

RZA

Birth Name: Robert Diggs

a.k.a.: The Abbott, Prince Rakeem, Rzarector, Bobby Steels, Bobby Digital

The Wu-Tang Clan's chief producer, the RZA was born in Brooklyn, and sent to live with an uncle in North Carolina when he was 3, after his uncle died shortly thereafter, Rza was came back to Brooklyn where he hooked up with his cousins, Ol' Dirty & The GZA. The three surfaced during the early 1990s as members of the rap unit All in Together Now. Following All in Together Now's dissolution, he signed to Tommy Boy under the name Prince Rakeem, issuing the 1991 EP Ooh We Love You Rakeem before joining the Wu-Tang; the group's 1993 debut, Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers, was one of the most influential hip-hop records of the era, with RZA's lean, menacing production work much imitated throughout the rap community in the years to follow.

In addition to remaining a member of the loose-knit Wu-Tang family and producing many of the group members' solo efforts, RZA also joined the Gravediggaz, helming their 1995 debut Six Feet Deep; his first full-length solo LP, RZA as Bobby Digital in Stereo, followed in 1998. In 1999, Hits, a compilation of some of the Wu-Tang family's best-known tracks, from both group and solo projects, was released under the RZA's name.

RZA is usually associated for his work on all the platinum-selling Wu-Tang albums and his production efforts on albums by Raekwon, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Method Man, GZA, Ghostface Killah, Gravediggaz, Bjork and the "Bulworth" soundtrack. But his creative sensibility extends far beyond music.

RZA's BOBBY DIGITAL concept combines all of his artistic talents. The character of BOBBY DIGITAL is entirely RZA's invention. The film BOBBY DIGITAL is also RZA's brainchild - he is producing, writing, directing and starring in it. To accompany the film, RZA made the soundtrack Bobby Digital in Stereo, his debut solo release on Gee Street Records.

The history of BOBBY DIGITAL is explained in the film: While RZA is conducting experiments at a laboratory on Wu Mountain, he stumbles upon a formula for self-transformation. Dipping a blunt into this elixir of "honey," he inhales and begins to hallucinate. When he finally comes to, he is confronted by the consequence of his experiments - he has created an actual person. Completely independent from RZA, his name is BOBBY DIGITAL.

BOBBY is a self-indulgent creature of the flesh who loves to womanize, party, spend money and wear the latest fashions. An eye patch over one eye conceals a micro-computer that is linked directly to BOBBY's brain. This device enables him to have supernatural powers. And BOBBY does not hesitate to put them in use. In short, he is a ghetto celebrity, admired and feared for his astounding ability to manipulate the world around him for his own benefit.

Joined by Method Man, Masta Killa, Killa Army, Black Knights of the North Star from Cali, RZA breaks new ground by performing as BOBBY DIGITAL on the soundtrack. Bobby Digital in Stereo presents an extension of the character from the film.

There is no doubt that BOBBY DIGITAL will not be the last masterpiece from this dynamic and prolific artist.
